Giorgia Meloni Condemns Union Leader for ‘Trump’s Courtesan’ Statement
The Italian Prime Minister has sharply criticized the chief of the major Italian trade union after he labeled her as a “courtesan” of President Donald Trump.
Background of the Controversial Comments
CGIL leader Maurizio Landini, the head of the CGIL union, issued the comment on a TV program on Tuesday. This followed global figures, Meloni among them, participated in a summit on Middle East peace in Egypt.
The union leader accused Meloni of “doing nothing” to promote peace in Gaza, saying her participation was restricted to “acting as Trump’s courtesan”. “Fortunately, Italian people took to the street to uphold the dignity and honour of this country,” he commented.
Prime Minister’s Reply
On her social media accounts on Thursday, Meloni stated that Landini was obviously obscured by increasing animosity (which is understandable)”. She proceeded to share a explanation of the word “courtesan”.
“I think most people are aware the most common meaning associated with this expression, but, for the benefit of people who don’t know, I have posted the first definition located via a simple web search,” Meloni explained, providing a screenshot that said: “Woman of loose morals, heterosexual; substitute term, escort.”
She also criticized her left-leaning critics, saying that over many years they had admonished us on women’s rights” only to then disparage a woman by “referring to her as a prostitute”.
Union Leader’s Explanation
Reacting to the post, Landini contended that there were “no sexist insults” toward the Prime Minister and that he had used “Trump’s subordinate”.
In a statement, he explained: “During a brief interview, that is publicly available, to prevent misinterpretation or exploitation of the term, I immediately clarified what I meant – that Meloni was trailing behind Trump, she was in Trump’s circle, she served as Trump’s underling.”
Connection with the US President
Meloni has consistently maintained friendly relations with the American leader. While addressing the audience during the Middle East event, Trump addressed the Italian Prime Minister – the sole female at the event – and complimented her beauty. “In the United States, such a remark might be the end of your political career,” he said. “However, I will risk it. Do you mind if I say you’re beautiful? As you are indeed beautiful.”
President Trump subsequently commended her as “a role model for everyone” in concerning the English edition of her work, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which includes a foreword by his son.
Previous Incidents
Earlier this year, Meloni also hit back after discovering that altered images of Meloni and other well-known Italian females had been shared on a explicit platform, expressing her disgust, and expressing “solidarity and support to all the women who have been violated, insulted, and offended”.
